Alessio De Gottardi was born in Bellinzona, Switzerland. He graduated as an architect in 2018 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich - ETHZ. During his studies he accomplished exchange programs in the University of Buenos Aires, the University of Tokyo and the National University of Singapore - Future Cities Laboratory. Co-founder of Campo Abierto, an interdisciplinary studio that investigates phenomena and processes of transformation of contemporary territories using photography and filmmaking as basis of the design process.

The sea has been an important part of some cultures since antiquity: from maritime civilizations, who recounted stories about the mythical words beyond the horizon, to mountain civilisations which narrated tales of the sea at the end of the world. It has been travelled and explored since prehistory. Our fascination with the sea is related to the act of returning home after a voyage; the „nostimon imar“, or sweet return of Ulysses in the Odyssey. It is only in relation to the land that the sea acquires such an enchanting power. It is the philosophical connection of the two that renders either one strong and fascinating and creates this strong magnetism.
