Alina Maria Frieske, born in Aachen in 1994 studied Visual Communication at the Fine Art Academy in Maastricht (NL) and finished her Master in Photography at Ecal in Lausanne 2019. Her interest is focused on the assembled image and its classification. Thereby she works with collage techniques and illustration to explore the process between individual and collective viewpoints.

Abglanz is a German word used to describe a ‘pale reflection’ or a ‘distant echo’. The project investigates the value and accessibility of personal visual information online. Fragments of images taken from social media platforms are reconstructed into a new scenario. Thereby, the original meaning of the images is put into another context. I collected the most recent images, looking for repeating patterns in bodily gestures and choice of the surrounding. The collection resulted in a visual encyclopaedia arranged by a commonality in depiction. Single fragments of the original images were multiplied and newly composed in hundreds of layers. With a shift in cut and scale, I want to question what is identifiable and alike a puzzle it allows for a constant reinterpretation about the source of the picture. The work becomes an allegory of display, questioning how we are reflected and recognized behind the screen. It is presented in a panoramic view in order to guide the attention through the collection at large.
