Samariter Die Samariter sind eine der ältesten ethnischen Gruppen und Religionsgemeinschaften. Ihr Volk besteht nur aus ca 700 Personen. Sie leben zwischen Palästina, Israel und Jordanien. Ihr Leben wird bestimmt durch alte Traditionen, nach den Büchern Moses und der Samaritischen Torah. Um die Osterzeit findet das Passah-Fest statt. Am Vorabend werden in den Familien gemeinsam Fladenbrote gebacken. Am nächsten Tag findet bei Sonnenuntergang das Oster-Opfer, das heisst die Schächtung der männlichen Lämmer statt. Diese werden danach in Erdlöchern gebacken und noch vor Mitternacht verspeist. Was übrig bleibt, wird auf dem Altar geopfert. Etwa eine Woche danach findet eine Pilgerwanderung zum heiligen Berg Gerizim statt. Nach Mitternacht gehen sie in die Synagoge um beten und singen und brechen dann noch vor Morgengrauen auf zum Berg. An heiligen Orten wird bis zum Sonnenaufgang gebetet.

The drive from Jericho to the dead sea resort of Ein-Bokek takes usually 1 hour. It took me 8 hours, in the one stormy day of 2020. 1) Dead Sea and the storm After the dark doomsday clouds release their load on land, water fills the dry riverbeds and floods the salty sea with mud and vegetation, creating its own painting. 2) Massada Mountain, drying at Sunset Later in the day, the sky opens-up over Massada and lets it bask in the sunlight. The soft light emphasizes the evaporating rainwater on the slopes. Massada is an ancient Herodian fortress. After a year of siege, as the Roman battering rams breached the fortress' walls, the 960 Jewish defenders committed mass suicide rather than fall prisoners. 3) The aftermath of the storm The morning after - there is still a lot of vapor in the air, with salt concentrations and crystals drawing new paintings as they float in gentle waves reflecting in the sun.

Art on Salt Twilight and dawn are always fascinating, and become uniquely magnificent at the salt plains of Uyuni – already half way into the sky at 3’656m altitude (Bolivian Andes). The crystal clear dry air and the perfect mirror of the thin water layer take us to a different dimension. With a little help from the weather, the sky and the mountains paint an incredible canvas on which the subjects float in-between. Take a moment – look at the images and let your mind and thoughts float freely in these beautiful spaces.
