Born 1943 in Finland I have been shooting pictures since I can remember and processed my first roll of film when I was 7 years old. In 1962 we moved to Israel, where I studied engineering. In 1987 I started working as an IT consultant in Switzerland. Today I am retired and occupy myself with photography, travel, and family.

Liquid Sculptures. I did some water drop photography 10 years ago with very primitive equipment. The results were intriguing. I saw the potential but also the complexity in creating ‘Liquid Art’. It took a world-wide pandemic to give me the time and opportunity to experiment, build my own equipment and shoot thousands on thousands of pictures of tiny falling water drops. I now have a fixed setup, ready to go anytime I feel like it. Slowly I started mastering the many parameters in the system. I managed to get repeatable and consistent results and was able to create the shapes I wanted. I process the pictures on my computer and create the Liquid Sculptures that you see here at the exhibition. You can see more on my website www.dportnoy.com

Autumn Bridges in Greece. In October/November 2021 I spent two weeks in Greece together with a friend, photographing some of the old stone bridges in the colourful autumn landscape. We drove our Jeep Renegade for more than 2600 kilometers over paved roads as well as muddy and steep mountain trails, crossing shallow rivers, to reach all of the planned 28 bridges. Zeus, the Greek god of weather, was good to us and let the rain stop whenever we arrived at a photo location. Every so often we got side-tracked by the dazzling fall colours all around us and stopped to shoot the beautiful views. Most of the pictures were shot using my trusted Nikon D850, but I also used my drone for some shots which I could not have gotten otherwise. Here are four of the more than two thousand pictures I shot. From left to right: Bridge of Konitsa, Bridge of Kontodimos or Lazaridis, Pyli Bridge, Kalogeriko-Plakidas Bridge.

HardHats – Building and construction workers. During the Covid-19 lock-down I started a (still ongoing) photo-project, shooting pictures of construction workers on a building site by our house. All the pictures were shot from our 5th floor bedroom window at distances between 20-60 meters. I used my Nikon D850 with the Nikon 200-500 mm and 70-200 mm zooms. You can see more pictures on my website www.dportnoy.com. Already before the Covid-19 outbreak, I started to shoot a picture (or two) a day of the buildings under construction. I then combined these pictures into a time-lapse movie, where you can see the buildings grow. The movie is available on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR3w21Xxoz0&ab_channel=DanielPortnoy and I update it periodically.

Urban People and Scenes. A selection of images taken in different parts of the world, depicting people in urban areas and situations, from the man walking his dog in snowing Stockholm, to the three policemen ogling the young woman in Rome. The displayed pictures are hand-crafted by me. I print them on thin aluminium sheets, which I first prepare with a transparent layer of coating to absorb the ink. Then I print the image with my inkjet photo printer and finish with a layer of glossy resin to bring life into the image. Lastly, I mount the coated image on a PVC backboard.
