Klaus Heilmann

At the age of 14 Klaus Heilmann got his first camera. During high school he also received a photo lab training. Still beeing a pupil he earned his first money with selling colour photographs for advertising purposes to AGFA and press photos to newspapers. Despite this promising beginning he decided not to become a professional photographer, studied medicine and became later professor of ophthalmology at the Technical University of Munich. Amongst other things his particular scientific interest lay in sensory functions of the eye, his inaugural lecture was on „Camera, Eye and Vision“.

Klaus Heilmann’s photographic work presents a different view on colour photography. By using all possibilities of digital photography and breaking classical photographic rules he shows an unmistakable own visual language and creates unfamiliar pictures, which are far away from what one knows from conventional landscape photography. In Heilmann’s photographic work the intention becomes clear, to cross the rigid boundaries between technic and art and thus between photography and painting. „Often it is my intention to let people forget, that the pictures they watch are photographs.“
