I am Livio Burtscher, a 25 year old photographer from Lucerne, Switzerland. While I spend half of the week capturing casualties of daily life and producing documentary photographic series, I work as a social worker in the asylum and refugee department in the other half. Mainly, I work with 35mm film or digital compact cameras. As a merger between these two worlds I aspire to include and embed different social perspectives and realities into my photographs.

The society of Madagascar is highly diverse due to its geographical and colonial history. Despite such extreme heterogeneity people live together in an astonishingly harmonic way. The social peace omnipresent in the Malagasy streets can be felt instantly. Their national Mantra “Mora Mora”, which means slowly slowly is emblematic for the way Malagasy people resolve their conflicts. Every captured moment displays vastly different work realities, which always have this certain kind of calm shining through. Whether it is peeling peanuts in a group, reparing cars, producing charcoal or offering goods at one of the many markets; there always is expressions of grace, dignity and optimism in people’s faces.
