Sabina Diethelm is a photographer from Winterthur, Switzerland, whose passion not only lies in creating aesthetically appealing images, but also in exploring and illuminating the stories about the people and places behind those images. Owing to her curious and empathetic nature and a background in journalism and communications, she understands the importance of good storytelling and with her photography she strives to create visually strong and meaningful narratives that go beyond the obvious.

For many, Nepal's capital Kathmandu is just a place of arrival; the base for an exciting trek into the Himalayas, the roof of the world. However, the city itself is just as fascinating and dense a place that is well worth exploring. There seem to be no clearly separated spheres of life here; under the haze that bathes everything in an orange-reddish glow, borders become blurred and everything overlaps: traffic and street trade, private and public life, religion, spirituality and day-to-day business. Many of the countless shrines and temples are used by both Buddhists and Hindus and are a destination for locals and travelers alike. Among other things, these photos show a Buddhist monastery school, the Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the “Monkey Temple”, and a Hindu burial ritual.

This is my most intimate and personal work to date: It was during a difficult and emotionally intense time that I created some initial self-portraits, trying to express the grief, anger, followed by hope, and then again helplessness and despair that I was going through at that time in those pictures. But the photographs were too weak, not meaningful enough - I put them aside and banished them from my thoughts, until months later, I found myself at the same (low) point again. Now the old, printed out pictures became the physical surface on which those same feelings were acted out, and thus acquired a whole new layer: ice stretches over spring flowers, the head is on fire, water distorts space and reality… I thus re-enacted what I had experienced at the time on my own self-portraits and re-photographed them. Entstanden ist die Serie im August 2020 im portugiesischen Bade- und Fischerort Cascais. Doch eigentlich könnte es überall und irgendwann sein. In ihrem Inhalt sind die Bilder zeitlos und universell: Kinder beim Spielen, Menschen, die die Sonne am Strand geniessen… Diese Bildserie stellt sich bewusst den vielen bedrückenden Bildern, die wir seit Monaten in den Medien sehen, entgegen. Sie appelliert an die kindliche Unbeschwertheit, die wir alle in uns tragen, und erinnert daran, dass es eben auch diese sonnigen, sorgenfreien Momente gibt, die das Leben schön machen.
