Benjamin Freedman is a Canadian artist working with sculpture, video and photography. His practice often examines environments and their physical or phycological relationship to the human body through extensive research and study. He is interested in using photography as a form of pseudo archaeology where reinterpretation and disruption lead to restorative discoveries. He has exhibited extensively across the greater Toronto area, most recently at Pumice Raft Gallery, Stephen Bulger Gallery, The Image Centre, 8eleven Gallery, Art and internationally at the Aperture Foundation in New York.

This presentation brings together two bodies of work by artist Benjamin Freedman generated using CGI that explore symbolism found in both domestic and work environments. In Home in the Valley Freedman presents a digitally reconstructed home that he visited on a family trip in 1998. Using only his memory as a blueprint, he furnished the home with digital assets sourced from the internet and arranged them in carefully rebuilt rooms. The images in the series remain uncanny still lives that suggest a strange human presence in a digital environment. In Bad Work his attention is given to the inherent banality of the everyday workplace which, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, has shifted away from an exclusively physical environment to one that can be virtual. Freedman reconstructs scenarios that explore the human reaction to boredom which include suspicion, rebellion and ennui.
