Laurence Kubski is a Swiss photographer whose practice moves between investigation and staging. Her work explores the complex relationships between humans and animals across cultures. Her projects include Crickets (2020), on the ancient Chinese tradition of keeping crickets as pets; Sauvages (2024), a photographic survey of encounters with wild animals in the canton of Fribourg.

Aquarium fish are one of the most popular pets. There are about 2 million private aquariums worldwide. And today 98% of ornamental marine fish are still caught directly in the wild. I managed to trace each player in the industry; from local enthusiasts, to some of the most important wholesalers in the world, all the way to fishermen in Indonesia, the largest exporting country.
